Here’s a short article about women playing men on stage in the nineteenth century. Of course it was not a new phenomenon, since there were all-female troupes of players in the past as well as the all-male groups we associate with Shakespeare in particular. The engravings suggest they were having an interesting time devising costumes suitable for a woman that nevertheless signified a man.
